St Edmund of Canterbury, Hayes

Worship at Home on Maundy Thursday

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you.  John 13:34

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

and also with you.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE
The minister gives an invitation to confession:

Our Lord Jesus Christ says, "If you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15)

Unless I wash you, you have no part with me. (John 13:8)

Let us confess to almighty God our sins against his love, and ask him to cleanse us.

Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

and in the good we have not done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, who died for us,

forgive us all that it past;

and lead us out of darkness

to walk as children of light.  Amen.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

The president pronounces absolution

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly king,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT

God our Father,

you have invited us to share in the supper

which your Son gave to his Church

to proclaim his death until he comes:

may he nourish us by his presence,

and unite us in his love;

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

THE WASHING OF FEET

Those taking part at home may at this point wash one another's feet, ending with this prayer:

Almighty Father, whose Son Jesus Christ taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for him; give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all. who gave up his life and died for us, yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Let us pray, trusting in the goodness of God and calling on his power to change our world.

Father, on this, the night he was betrayed, your Son Jesus Christ washed his disciples' feet.  We commit ourselves to follow his example of love and service.

Lord, hear us,

and humble us.

On this night, he prayed for his disciples to be one.

We pray for the unity of your Church ...

Lord, hear us,

and unite us.

On this night, he prayed for those who were to believe through their message.

We pray for the mission of your Church ...

Lord, hear us,

and renew our zeal.

On this night, he commanded them to love, but suffered rejection himself.

We pray for the rejected and unloved ...

Lord, hear us,

and fill us with your love.

On this night, he reminded them that if the world hated them it hated him first.

We pray for those who are persecuted for their faith ...

Lord, hear us,

and give us your peace.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

THE PEACE

the president says

Jesus says: 'Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.'    John 14:27

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

I invite you now share the peace with those who are with you or to text, or message or email someone you know with the words "peace be with you".

Offertory Hymn:

TAKING OF THE BREAD AND WINE

At the Eucharist we are with our crucifed and risen Lord.  We know that it was not only our ancestors, but we who were redeemed and brought forth from bondage to freedom, from mourning to feasting.  We know that as he was with them in the upper room so our Lord is here with us now.

Until the kingdom of God comes let us celebrate the feast.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you

and also with you

Lift up your hearts

We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right  to give you thanks,

Father most holy, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

For on this night he girded himself with a towel and, taking the form of a servant, washed the feet of his disciples.  He gave us a new commandment

that we should love one another as he has loved us.  Knowing that his hour had come, in his great love he gave this supper to his disciples to be a memorial of his passion, that we might proclaim his death until he comes again, and feast with him in his kingdom.

Therefore earth unites with heaven to sing a new song of praise;we too join with angels and archangels,

as they proclaim your glory without end:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine

may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me.

Jesus Christ is Lord:

Lord, by your cross and resurrection

you have set us free.

You are the Saviour of the World.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,

his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,

we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,

we bring before you this bread and this cup

and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people

and gather into one in your kingdom

all who share this one bread and one cup,

so that we, in the company of Edmund and all the saints,

may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,

for ever and ever.    Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.   Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

though we are many, we are one Body, because we share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace.

GIVING OF COMMUNION

Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Be present, be present,

Lord Jesus Christ,

our risen high priest;

make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen.

Communion Hymns

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.                                                 after the Prayer of St Richard of Chichester

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Silence is kept.

Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

                                                1 Corinthians 11:26

The post-communion prayer is said.

Lord Jesus Christ,

we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament

you have given us the memorial of your passion:

grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries

of your body and blood

that we may know within ourselves

and show forth in our lives

the fruit of your redemption,

for you are alive and reign, now and for ever. Amen.

The Watch

At this point in the service in church the Blessed Sacrament is carried to the place of repose as we all remain in quiet prayer.  After a period of silent prayer the ministers depart.

In remembrance of Christ's passion the church is stripped of all ornamentation.

The church will stay open for prayer until the office of Compline brings our watch to an end.

An Order for Night Prayer (Compline)

 Preparation

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
All Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
All who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

The following or other suitable words of penitence may be used

All Most merciful God,
we confess to you,
before the whole company of heaven and one another,
that we have sinned in thought, word and deed
and in what we have failed to do.
Forgive us our sins,
heal us by your Spirit
and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.

O God, make speed to save us.
All O Lord, make haste to help us.

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.
Alleluia.

The Word of God

Psalmody

One or more of the following psalms may be used.

Psalm 4

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness;
you set me at liberty when I was in trouble;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

How long will you nobles dishonour my glory;
how long will you love vain things and seek after falsehood?

But know that the Lord has shown me his marvellous kindness;
when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.

Stand in awe, and sin not;
commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness
and put your trust in the Lord.

There are many that say, 'Who will show us any good?'
Lord, lift up the light of your countenance upon us.

You have put gladness in my heart,
more than when their corn and wine and oil increase.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for it is you Lord, only, who make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 134

Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,
you that by night stand in the house of the Lord.

Lift up your hands towards the sanctuary
and bless the Lord.

The Lord who made heaven and earth
give you blessing out of Zion.

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Scripture Reading

The servants of the Lamb shall see the face of God, whose name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night: they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.

Revelation 22.4,5

The following responsory may be said in Easter

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Alleluia, alleluia.
All Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Alleluia, alleluia.
For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
All Alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
All Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Keep me as the apple of your eye.
All Hide me under the shadow of your wings.

Gospel Canticle

The Nunc dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is said or sung

All Save us, O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep may rest in peace.

Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace:
your word has been fulfilled.

My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;

A light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.

Luke 2.29-32

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

All Save us, O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep may rest in peace.

Prayers

Intercessions and thanksgivings may be offered here.

The Collect

Silence may be kept.

Visit this place, O Lord, we pray,
and drive far from it the snares of the enemy;
may your holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace,
and may your blessing be always upon us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.

The Lord's Prayer may be said.

The Conclusion

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
All for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus,
All for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning,
All so do we look for you, O Christ.

[Come with the dawning of the day
All and make yourself known in the breaking of the bread.]

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace.
All Amen.
