10th November 2024: Remembrance Sunday
Introit Hymn:
Prayers of Penitence
God so loved the world
that He gave His only Son Jesus Christ
to save us from our sins,
to be our advocate in heaven,
and to bring us to eternal life.
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith,
firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments
and to live in love and peace with all.
Almighty God, our heavenly
Father,
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through
weakness,
through our own deliberate
fault.
We are truly sorry
and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus
Christ,
who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve
you in
newness of life to the glory
of your name.
Amen.
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Absolution
Almighty God who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Liturgy of the Word
Collect:
Almighty Father,
whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority,
and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin,
to be subject to his just and gentle rule;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Old Testament Reading: Jonah 3:1-5,10
Psalm 62:5-end
Refrain: Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul.
5 Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul; ♦
for in him is my hope.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, ♦
my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. [R]
7 In God is my strength and my glory; ♦
God is my strong rock; in him is my refuge.
8 Put your trust in him always, my people; ♦
pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
9 The peoples are but a breath,
the whole human race a deceit; ♦
on the scales they are altogether lighter than air.
10 Put no trust in oppression; in robbery take no empty pride; ♦
though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.
11 God spoke once, and twice have I heard the same, ♦
that power belongs to God.
12 Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord, ♦
for you repay everyone according to their deeds.
Refrain: Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul.
New Testament Reading: Hebrews 9:24 - end
Gradual Hymn:
Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
Sermon:
The Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from
heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin
Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and
glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic
Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of
sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
Intercessions:
United in the company of all the faithful and looking for the coming of the kingdom, let us offer our prayers to God the source of all life and holiness.
Merciful Lord, strengthen all Christian people by your Holy Spirit that we may live as a royal priesthood and a holy nation to the praise of Christ Jesus our Saviour.
O Prince of Peace, bring your peace in all places where there is violent conflict. Turn back the edge of the sword, frustrate the plans of the wicked and protect and save the innocent.
Bless our bishops, and all ministers of your church, that by faithful proclamation of your word we may be built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets into a holy temple in the Lord.
Empower us by the gift of your Holy and Life-Giving Spirit that we may be transformed into the likeness of Christ from glory to glory.
Give to the world and its peoples the peace that comes from above, that they may find Christ's way of freedom and life.
Touch and heal all those who in mind, body or spirit are in need of God's healing and wholeness, for nothing is impossible for God. Let us pray for Penelope, Doreen B (Sue's Mum), Henry, Beth, Alexander, Felicity, Eleanor, Niamh and Brendan. .
Bring comfort to all who mourn, remembering those who have died recently, among them Jake Collick and those whose anniversary falls at this time among them: Donald Pugh, Gwen Sheldrake, Edna Hyland, and Diana Sargood.Liturgy of the Sacrament:
The Peace
We are the Body of Christ. In the One Spirit we were all baptised into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
I invite you now share the peace with those who are with you or to text, or message or email someone you know with the words "peace be with you". Go on, send a little love!
Offertory Hymn:
Be present, be present,
Lord Jesus Christ,
our risen high priest;
make yourself known in the breaking of bread.
Amen.
Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
Agnus Dei
Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. after the Prayer of St Richard of Chichester
Communion Hymns:
Post Communion Prayer, Blessing and Dismissal
Post Communion Prayer:
God of peace,
whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom
and restored the broken to wholeness of life:
look with compassion on the anguish of the world,
and by your healing power
make whole both people and nations;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Recessional Hymn:
Act of Remembrance
In the presence of God, we commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace. We pray for all who, in bereavement, disability and pain, continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them.
We will remember them.
The beginning of the two-minute silence may be signalled by the ringing of the church bell 11 times.
Silence
At the completion of the silence The Kohima Epitaph is said:
When you go home tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow we gave our today.
The following prayer is said:
Ever-living God
we remember those whom you have gathered
from the storm of war into the peace of your presence;
may that same peace calm our fears,
bring justice to all peoples
and establish harmony among the nations,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God grant to the living grace,
to the departed rest,
to the Church, the King and the Commonwealth and all people,
unity, peace and concord,
and to us and all God's servants, life everlasting;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you all
and remain with you always.
